Writing Prompts

Expository/Descriptive:

Imaginative Descriptive-

• Describe your favorite food.
• Describe your least favorite food.
• Describe your pet.
• Describe your favorite place
• Describe a garden.

Factual Descriptive-

• Describe yourself.
• Describe your favorite movie character.
• Describe a family member.
• Describe your best friend.
• Describe your favorite teacher.
• Your friend wants to build a snowman but has never done it before.  Write directions for him/her that tell how to build a snowman.
• Think of something you just learned to do. Explain how to do it.
• Think of your favorite sandwich.  Explain how to make it.
• Imagine you could “invent” the perfect brother or sister.  Describe what he/she would be like.
• Imagine you could design your perfect room.  Describe it.

Narrative Descriptive-

• Write about a time you were in a snowstorm.
• Write about a time you were in a thunderstorm.
• Write about the time when you lost your first tooth.

Realistic Descriptive-

• Write about the first time you rode a bike.
• Write about the first time you walked into school.
• Write about the time you met your best friend.
