Response to Literature Building Blocks

State your topic sentence.  This is the sentence that defines the subject of the whole piece and tells the reader some general information about it.  (You may use a short attention-grabber if it directly relates to the topic.  You may create a list of upcoming topics that will be discussed.)

1.    Write one paragraph for each of the main ideas that relate to the topic.  Each paragraph should have its own main idea sentence that tells about the topic.

2.    The remaining sentences in the paragraph should include specific examples and quotes from the literature that support your topic sentence (the proof).

3.    If it is appropriate to your topic, include specific relevant personal experiences.

The conclusion is the final paragraph of a response to literature.  Restate the topic and show the reader that you have a thorough understanding of the text.
