• Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA)

The annual Pennsylvania System School Assessment is a standards-based, criterion-referenced assessment, which provides students, parents, educators and citizens with an understanding of student and school performance related to the attainment of proficiency of the academic standards.  These standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science and Technology identify what a student should know and be able to do at varying grade levels.  School districts possess the freedom to design curriculum and instruction to ensure that students meet or exceed the standards' expectations.

Every Pennsylvania student in grades 3 through 8 is assessed in English Language Arts and Math.  Every Pennsylvania student in grades 4 and 8 is assessed in science.

    Dear Parent or Guardian,

Please be advised that all seventh and eighth grade students at Southern Lehigh Middle School will participate in the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment or PSSA during the months of April and May.

Middle School testing dates are as follows:
    ELA - Tuesday, April 25 - Thursday, April 27
    Math - Tuesday, May 2 - Wednesday, May 3
    Science (8th grade ONLY) - Tuesday, May 9 - Wednesday, May 10

The PSSA assessments are based on the Pennsylvania Core Standards. As such, they are designed to assist school districts in determining the quality of their educational programs. Parents can reassure children that these assessments give them an opportunity to demonstrate their learning and help teachers plan the best possible instruction for them.

Please make every effort to ensure your child attends school during these testing periods. In addition, we appreciate your support and encouragement for your child during this time.

Please feel free to contact your child’s principal or guidance counselor if you have any questions. Additionally, you can reach out to Victoria Butz, School Assessment Coordinator, (butzv@slsd.org) for any further information.
